Testing the Hypothesis, Part II
9A: Testing the Hypothesis, Part II
Through out the interview process the second time around, I
found that people aren’t excited to be on their phones for social media when
they can be social in person. I think
everyone has that feeling (or hope so), but because of how easy it is to start
going between social medias while people around that it seems that phones are
greater than human interactions sometimes.
This is my solution.
Who: There are
certain social media users that fall outside of the boundary, though they share
a lot with those in the boundary. The
biggest group is those that don’t download the apps on their phones, but rather
just go on their computers or through Safari.
During the interviews, I found that a lot of people actually
prefer to not have social medias on their phone due to the distractions and
notifications (the red dots with numbers that appear on apps). I think a tweak I could make is to not make
the app send notifications, if that would be something that people would rather
have. From the sounds of my interviews,
this is actually a big motivating factor.
What: Yeah, all
the apps already exist on the phone, which people were not shy to already tell
me. The need is different because from
other social media apps because it gets rid of all those annoying
notifications, eliminates wasted time switching between them, and creates a
place for people to quickly go through their social medias so they’re not
“wasting time” on their phones when they could be making real connections in
person.
Why: The
underlying cause of the outsiders’ need is different because a lot of the
people don’t have all their social media apps on their phone because they don’t
want to get the notifications and don’t want to waste their time on their
phones when they can be making real life connections.
Summary: In my
findings, the people that were out of my initial opportunity were the people
that were not going on social media through the apps on their phones. I tweaked my idea now to not only an app, but
also a website that would make it so that people wouldn’t get lost changing
through their social medias any where.

Solving the Problem
8A: Solving the Problem
As a fan of The Office and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, I’m very well versed in business
ideas and ventures that the employees and gang takes on. Whether it’s the Always Sunny gang getting involved in a ponzi-scheme or fraudulent
steak restaurant, or Michael creating his own paper company, finding an
opportunity and taking it is something that I have grown by watching my
favorite TV shows.
Be that as it may, the two opportunities that I have seen a
while doing the previous exercises are consolidating social medias to one app
and a social media for screenwriters. I’m
going to focus on both, but originally my social media opportunity was
broader. Wouldn’t it be great if instead
of a new social media for screenwriters to connect there was just an app for
where they could just find each other on the social medias they already have?
The product I’m proposing is an app for screenwriters that
they can connect through all of their social medias. So instead of having a completely different
social media, the screenwriter would sign up for this app and log into all of
their social medias so that they can find and connect with other
screenwriters. This would eliminate a
new social media that people would feel like they had to log into, and would
rather solve the problem without creating a new problem.

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1
Assignment 7A
Merging all the social medias into one place
The opportunity that I am pursuing is merging all of the
social medias (Snapchat, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn,
YouTube, etc.) into one place or app.
Social media users are lazy and hate switching between all the
apps. If there were a place for all of
these, there wouldn’t be a bunch of annoying notifications coming from all
these platforms.
·
The Who:
Social media users
·
The What:
Social media platforms
·
The Why:
Laziness, switching between apps, and annoying amount of notifications coming
from all these platforms.
Testing the Who:
There are numerous people with this need.
With millions and millions of people using each of these social medias
out there, there is definitely an opportunity, especially when collaborating
between the platforms is growing.
Testing the What:
Social medias and networks are what the TV was by the 1960s: everyone has
them. Most of the time anyone is on
their phone anywhere, at any time of the day, they are on some sort of social
platform connecting with friends or browsing through their newsfeeds.
Testing the Why:
This comes down to notifications, the hassle of switching between apps, and
phone storage space. If there were one
app for all social medias, you wouldn’t need to have 10 different apps taking
up about the same amount of data. Being
more efficient is better when you are someone that is lazy.
Interview #1:
While talking to my first interviewee, my brother Jacob, I found out a lot
about his social media surfing preferences.
He said that while he is on one social media he might get a notification
on say Instagram and have to switch to it, wait for it to reload, respond, and
then go back to where he was on the other one.
This was problematic for him because sometimes the other social media
would reset and he’d have to scroll all the way back down to where he was
initially. One place to look at
everything would be more beneficial because he wouldn’t have to repeat this
step every time he got off one social media app to go somewhere else on his
phone.
Interview #2: My
second interview was with my close friend since sophomore year of college. He said he HATES having to have all the
different apps on his phone for his social medias. He is an avid PrequelMemer on Reddit and said
a place to create his memes and put them on the app directly would be a cool
feature for the app as well, but I think that goes beyond my additional idea of
just social medias in one app.
Interview #3: The
third interview was with my girlfriend Gabby.
She deleted Instagram and Facebook from her phone because they were too
distracting. She also said that if there
was one app with all the social medias, it would be hard to turn away from her
phone (and that app), which is something that I would have to consider if I
were to produce this app. Also, she has
to log in in Safari to her Facebook and Instagram, so a place for even saving
passwords might be something she would consider.
Interview #4: My fourth interview was with my mother about
social medias. She is new to using
Instagram and Facebook, and she wants to get into even more new social
medias. She said that a place for her to
have her new social medias would be cool if it were easily accessible and not
hard to go through. This is interesting
because I didn’t think of the people who had a hard time surfing their social
medias and is something I would have to consider when designing my place for
all the social medias to be.
Interview #5:
This interview was with my little brother’s girlfriend Katie. She said she doesn’t use many social medias
besides Facebook and Snapchat on a daily basis.
She even asked how this app would be beneficial when she only had to go
on those two platforms, which got me to thinking. Additionally, how could I have a place for
those two social medias? These are some
things I would have to consider when working on this opportunity.
Summarization of my
findings: I now know that everyone
isn’t the same as me while using social medias.
I use almost every single one on my phone, whereas some go on their
laptop. Another thing I learned was that
people might not know how to use them and switch between them as well as me, so
that would be something to consider as well.
Lastly, I think it’s interesting that some people are annoyed with the
apps losing their spots while they switch between social networks.

Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends
Assignment 6A
Hipster Culture and Instagram Are Responsible for a Good
Thing
Opportunity: I’m pretty sure there is an opportunity here
for a number of reasons. One, using art,
murals and paintings as a form of advertising instead of traditional
advertising is something that will actually be noticed. Hipsters seem to be interested in art and
murals and this would be a good way to advertise to them.
The prototypical
customer: Hipsters in large cities such as Portland or Seattle.
Exploitation: This
opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because it not only creates a
beautiful scenery inside otherwise bland city building walls, but also helps
advertisers get to their desired market.
Why I saw
opportunity: I think for me, it has
a lot to do with me being an advertising major and someone who *appreciates* art.
Trends to watch with Programmatic Advertising
Opportunity: There
is an opportunity here for advertisers like myself to become more
efficient. Computers can compute and
make transactions so much faster than humans, so it makes sense. There is an opportunity to create apps and
other forms of platforms to help get programmatic advertising even more ahead
of the curve.
The prototypical
customer: advertisers and advertising buyers are the prototypical customers.
Why I saw
opportunity: Apps are created for everything nowadays, such as sending
money on Venmo or ride-sharing on Uber.
It makes sense to use it in an industry to buy and sell advertising.
Open Banking
Source: https://thefinancialbrand.com/68630/2018-banking-financial-institution-predictions-forrester/
Opportunity: With
the start of open banking, there is potential to create a relationship with
Facebook or Amazon where your banking will help you make purchases easier. The
opportunity is to team up with Amazon so that you don’t even have to put in a
credit card information, but take the money directly from your bank instead.
The prototypical
customer: Anyone who banks or uses Amazon.
Why I saw
opportunity: Amazon does something similar with Whole Foods where you just
scan your groceries and walk out. I had
to talk about this impact in one of my classes so that’s how I saw the
opportunity.
Repealing of Obamacare
Opportunity: If
Obamacare is repealed, a lot of people might be out of healthcare. The opportunity is to become a provider of
cheap healthcare for those in need.
The prototypical
customer: Those who cannot afford a ridiculous plan for healthcare and want
to still be covered by insurance for not a huge fee.
Why I saw
opportunity: When there is deregulation, markets start flocking to help
meet unmet needs of a vast majority of people.
This is why I think this could be a successful business.
